Signs, signs, everywhere signs

April 3rd, 2011

Charlotte’s getting lots of (spoken) words, and at the same time her sign vocabulary is growing by leaps and bounds. Some of the latest:

  • eat (points at mouth)
  • music (touching right elbow with left hand), including requesting “more music” (two signs in a row)
  • some specific songs:
    • “Toes”/points at toes (Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)
    • “Its”/puts fingers together (Itsy Bitsy Spider)
    • “Row”/rocks back and forth (Row Row Row Your Boat)
  • and a couple of home-grown signs
    • wash hands (rubs hands together)
    • brush teeth (points at mouth and makes exaggerated spitting noise, just like her big sister)

Bathtime fun

March 11th, 2011

Says Henrietta, in her bath, “Jetboat! What a refreshing name for a jetboat!”

Mardi Gras

March 8th, 2011

“I don’t know where my tortellini shirt is!”
“Your tortellini shirt?”
“The one from New Orleans!”
“Ooooohhhh…your fleur de lis shirt?”
[hysterical laughter all around]

The grass is always greener….

March 4th, 2011

Walking to day care this morning, with about 20° and a bit of a breeze, Henrietta announced:

“It’s not like this in Florida. Stupid weather.”

Words and more words

February 24th, 2011

Charlotte, after dropping a baby doll on the floor at school: “Uh-oh, baby!”

Henrietta, meanwhile, now understands exaggeration. As in, “It’s so windy, our house might fall down!” “No, Etta, our house won’t fall down.” “I know, I was exaggerating!”

Also, where did she learn this?

She’s on the move!

February 23rd, 2011

On the 16th (Happy Birthday, Grandma Marg!), Charlotte decided she was ready to start walking, and she hasn’t stopped moving since!

Turns out she’s been teaching herself other things at school, too:

And Etta’s picked up a new song:

February 8th, 2011

Henrietta: “I would like to be a scientist when I grow up, because I like looking for things.”

It’s my life!

January 19th, 2011

Upon being asked to stop talking and eat her supper, Henrietta announced, “But…if I can’t talk, I can’t live!”

1 year old

January 18th, 2011

One year old Birthday girl!

From the one year checkup:

  • 30″ tall (75th percentile)
  • 19 lbs 14 oz (27th percentile)
  • 49.5 cm head circumference (99.94th percentile)

Charlotte’s words include:

  • Etta
  • Dada
  • Basil (Dazl)
  • ball
  • dog
  • bear
  • that (pointing)
  • this (pointing)
  • shaking her head “no”

Plus baby signs for:

  • more
  • eat
  • all done
  • milk

Henrietta reports that Charlotte can:

  • climb up on a chair
  • climb up on the table
  • crawl
  • stand up
  • “If you hold her hands and walk behind her, you can make her walk.”

Bored in the airport

January 14th, 2011

We’re sitting around at the Fort Lauderdale Airport. After a rather dramatic tantrum involving, I think, a disagreement about the iPad, Henrietta announced, “I’m tired of everything. And my pinky is stuck.” (In a loop on her shoe, I believe.)
